Tax Strategy for W-2 Earners

Stop overpaying the IRS. Learn which deductions matter, how withholding works, and the difference between a tax refund and a tax strategy.

A big tax refund isn't a win — it means you gave the government an interest-free loan. Let's fix that.

What you'll learn

WithholdingItemized vs standard deductionCreditsHSA/FSA

Withholding is the lever most people ignore. Adjust your W-4 to match your actual tax situation — too much withheld means a refund (bad), too little means a bill (worse).

Standard deduction (2025: $15,000 single / $30,000 married) beats itemizing for most people. Itemize only if your deductible expenses (mortgage interest, charity, medical) exceed the standard amount.

Above-the-line deductions are the real gold: HSA contributions ($4,300 individual / $8,600 family), IRA contributions ($7,000 / $8,000 if 50+), student loan interest ($2,500 max). These reduce your AGI directly.

Tax credits > deductions. Credits reduce your tax dollar-for-dollar. The Child Tax Credit ($2,000/child), education credits (AOTC $2,500), and energy credits are the most valuable ones.
